A Web server is, in many ways, similar to a typical PC as you may have in front of you now. While the machine is tailored to 'serving' Web pages over a network, the machine has to run an 'Operating System' like any other machine.
The most common operating system at home and in offices is Windows, and there are many Web servers that run this operating system too. Most Web servers, however, run a free operating system called Linux or FreeBSD. These operating systems are more suited to the high demand work that Web servers do.
